When Alec Angus Donald was young and fit he worked on an American boat in Port Bàn fishing for Mackerel. And by gosh, the captain of the boat was looking for a strong lad to work on the boat,

so Alec Angus Donald joined. He went aboard the ship and set out for two or three years.

On one occasion a terrible storm came over the island with rain and flooding. It lasted for a week and they couldn't do anything but stay down and away from the main floor of the ship.


One morning it was terribly dark and the sailors were staring up towards the tops of the masts and they could only see about halfway up because the masts were stuck in the sky as a result of how high the tides had risen.



Alec climbed up to the top of the mast and took out a sailor's knife he had in his pocket and he cut a hole around the mast to release it. The sky was two feet thick and made out of something like light grey felt. There were two stars that were like two little lights, in the piece that he removed from the sky.

He stuck his head up in the sky for just a minute before coming back down, and he was as white as a sheet. One of the American Soldiers asked him "What's up there?"
"By God, '' he replied, "there's nothing up there but broken thunder and burnt out lightning."
