- Kannagi and Kovalan decided to move to Madurai after Kovalan had depleted all their wealth. Since they had no possessions, Kannagi decided to sell one of her anklets.
- Kannagi, How will we rekindle our fortunes now? The future is so uncertain.
- We will sell one of the pair of anklets that I have.
- The couple began their journey and on their way, they visited the sage Kavundi to seek her blessings. The saint decided to accompany them on their journey, and they walked for many days till they reached Vaigai.
- Stay here while I venture forth into Madurai so that I can seek our fortune here.
- This looks like the queen's anklet which I stole recently. How lucky am I that this man has come to me to sell this jewel! Now I can blame him for the theft, and escape the punishment.
- Please wait in my humble shop while I assess your precious anklet.
- On reaching the marketplace, Kovalan met a goldsmith and asked him the worth of his wife's anklet. Little did Kovalan know that he met a crafty man. The goldsmith, a habitual liar and thief looked at the ornament and decided to show it to the king to escape his punishment for his theft of the queen's anklet by shifting the blame onto Kovalan.
- I have come from afar. This is my wife's anklet, I would be honoured if you would take a look at it and tell me what it is worth.
