- This story takes place around the world, but in the beginning of this book, it takes place at a mission school in a town called Gallup. The main character in the book is Ned Begay. He is going to the mission school to learn the English language. This story takes place in the mid-1900s.
- Climax
- Ned joins the Marines and becomes a code talker. In the Marines, he has to translate messages that are written in code. This is a very dangerous job, since he is working in the middle of the battles in World War II. While this is happening, Navajos are being treated unfairly. He is also fighting to change the way Navajos are being treated.
- Falling Action
- After easily getting through training camp, Ned and the other Marines start to gain control of multiple islands in the Pacific ocean. It is a challenge, but with the help of the code talkers, the Marines are gaining control of island after island.
- Resolution
- The next island the Marines are trying to take over is Iwo Jima. During this battle, the Marines struggle to beat the Japanese.
- In the end, the Marines win this battle. After a few more small battles, Japan surrenders. The United States beat Japan! Soon after that, Ned gets to return home.
- The story ends when Ned becomes a teacher because he wants to teach kids the Navajo language.
