  • Perks of Being a Wallflower By: Cayden Lauziere
  • The perks of being a wallflower is a coming of age story that champions and celebrates inclusivity and tolerance. It shows the transformative power of acceptance and the detrimental effects of being ignored, or miss treated. When Charlie enters high school, he’s withdrawn and struggles to connect to others due to the pain of two traumatic deaths he has experience. He feels like an outcast, liking trust in people. However, everything changes from Patrick and Sam embraced Charlie working, ming him into the group. Through their friendship, Charlie discovers the joy of having genuine connections.
  • Theme
  • A standout moment is when they all participate in the Rocky horror picture show, which serves as a powerful symbol of a safe space, where everyone can feel both completely included in utterly inhibited. If I like the importance of providing an environment, where people can be their authentic self without fear of judgment. The perks of being a wallflower beautifully reminds us of the significance of acceptance, friendship, and creating spaces where everyone feels valued and free to express themselves.
  • Evidence
  • In the final letter of part 1, Charlies writes, “When we got out of the tunnel, Sam screamed this really fun scream, and there it was. Downtown. Lights on buildings and everything that makes you wonder. Sam sat down and started laughing. Patrick started laughing. I started laughing. And in that moment, I swear we were infinite.” The quote shows the powerful bond between Charlie, Patrick, and Sam. Driving through the tunnel, feels magical to Charlie, symbolizing his transformation from a lonely outsider to someone with caring friends. This moment makes Charlie feel "infinite” and free from his past trauma. He is finally being included in something and realizes that through everything he’s been through, happiness can still exist.
