  • The Birth of Siddhartha Guatama
  • Unlike Other Children
  • Shielded from the World.
  • HE was born around 520 b.c. To king Suddhodana and queen Mahamaya. In what is currently southern Napal. Everyone was rejoiced at the idea of a baby prince, and had extremely high hopes for the future king.
  • The Harsh Reality
  • According to tradition, the baby was born fully awake, and could speak. When he spoke he said that he’d been born to free mankind from suffering. It is also said that when he walked, lotus blossoms bloomed in his footprints. They named him Siddhartha. When the king went to consult his seer about his newborn son, the seer said that the baby would be one of two things, either a mighty king or a savior of humanity.
  • Leaving the Palace
  • For 29 years, Siddhartha lived in perfect peace at the palace. His father kept him sheltered from all things involving death, illness, and all the ugly things in the world. His father had him grow up in a seemingly perfect world because he wanted Siddhartha to be a King like him. The king thought that if Siddhartha only knew pleasure, then he would not dedicate his life to religion.
  • Becoming the Buddha
  • One day, Siddhartha rode into town on his carriage for a personal tour of the capitol. The king asked for only healthy, young, individuals to walk near his son. But, Siddhartha caught a glimpse of a bundle of ill people, and his first sight of a dead body.
  • Siddhartha could not bear to live his life without doing anything for the underprivileged people of the world. He made the decision to leave the palace, his wife, and newborn son to give away most of his belongings to study with ascetics. He chose a life of starvation and pain to the point of near death.
  • Siddhartha found the middle ground between luxury and the painful ascetic lifestyle. He ate, bathed, and drank again. He realized the answers to many of his problems, and remembered his past life by sitting by a tree for days. After many realizations about life, he became the Buddha.
