  • Spoken text:Jane: Good Morning! I am excited to share some information with you all on the strategic value of knowledge management! It is very important tthat GDD takes meaningful steps towards collecting and saving tacit knowledge to be used by all GDD employees. Written text: Organizational memory loss threatens profit gain and compromises the companies experiences and organizational knowledge (Kransdorff, 1997). Organizational memory acts as an adhesive and is the type of information that holds the company together and allows it to operate (Kransforff, 1997). Knowledge workers are responsible for value creation and this type of loss is considered corporate amnesia and comes at a high price (Dalkir, 2011 p. 366).
  • Why should you care
  • Spoken text:Mr. Rockfish: Jane, as you know, GDD is currently dealing with organizational memory loss. Can you please elaborate on our current issues.Jane: Sure, I would like to go over a few recent discoveries of organizational memory loss at GDD. Written Text: Current organizational memory loss is due to downsizing, retirement, outsourcing, and high mobility (Dalkir, 2011, p. 366). There has been a significant decrease in the amount of time highly skilled and experienced workers are staying with the organization which has also been seen at GDD (Dalkir, 2011). GDD is currently struggling with memory loss due to retirement and high turnover in management positions and other knowledge workers and is currently causing operational disruptions in the shipping department and could potentially lead to uninformed decisions being made on large purchases.
  • The role of technology
  • Spoken text:Board member: What is the cost of organizational memory loss? How does this impact us?Jane: Organizational memory loss will cost GDD now and in the future. By implementing a solid KM plan, GDD can set their sights on innovation and increased revenue Let me explain.Written text:Turnover for any reason will cost GDD money to hire and train new workers. It also makes new hire assimilation more difficult (Kransdorff, 1997). This has a large impact at senior management levels where employees are expected to make important and strategic decisions (Kransdorff, 1997). Without organization specific continuity, GDD has a lower ability to learn from their unique experiences and run the risk of repeating past mistakes, misapplying prior successes, and reinventing the wheel (Kransdorff, 1997). Not having the knowledge available to new workers like Imogine will cost in poor decision making now and in the future. GDD also runs the risk of losing their competitive advantage if they do not capture all the things that make it special and unique which will equate to decreased revenue and potential loss of market space.
  • Conclusion
  • This concludes my brief, I hope you are all on board with implementing a KM system!
  • I'm interested in learning more!
  • Spoken text:Jane: The key to combatting organizational memory loss is to capture tacit knowledge. Your company, your people and your profits will see improvement.Board Member: What specific improvements can GDD expect to see?Written text:A well designed and managed organizational memory will fight corporate amnesia and ensure continuity, effectively transferring “know-how” among peer and future knowledge workers (Dalkir, 2011, p. 366) Retaining and capturing tacit knowledge will help prevent memory loss by making innovations and best practices available for re-use (Dalkir, 2011 p. 368). GDD would benefit from Harry’s previous work being available to Imogine. Capturing best practices in shipping from Asia would have prevented additional costs and lost time reconstructing something that was already in place, thus making the workforce more productive. Organizational memory increases the transparency of the o and workers will see this transparency (Dalkir, 2011, p. 373). This can improve organizational culture and retention.

  • What specific improvements can GDD expect to see?
  • Spoken text:Mr. Rockfish: How do we begin to capture tacit knowledge and make it available to all our employees?Jane: Technology is our largest ally and tool in getting started. It allows for the capture, storage and easy access of information, connecting people to resources and problems.Written text:GDD can leverage technology to collect and store information to reduce memory loss. Knowledge continuity ensures that knowledge is not lost due to employee attrition (Dalkir, 2011). Knowledge access is the ability to know about previous knowledge and easily find it within knowledge systems like intranets (Dalkir, 2011). Technology supports continuity and access of knowledge for GDD. Without technology to assist in collecting, storing and retaining information, GDD employees will struggleto re-use information, experiences, lessons learned and best practices that will lead to better decision making and operational efficiencies.
