  • One day while Orpheus and Eurydice were walking she stepped on a snake. The snake bit her foot and she died.
  • Orpheus was very sad. The other nymphs were also sad but tried to win over Orpheus' affections, but he didn't care for them. He was determined to see Eurydice again.
  • Orpheus had heard tales of a cave that led to the underworld. He somehow found the cave and ventured to it. He had to get across the river Styx by paying the ferryman. From there he approached the throne of Hades and Persephone.
  • When Orpheus approached the throne he requested Eurydice be returned to him.Hades immediately rejected the request. Orpheus resorted to playing his lyre and singing to convince them. His playing sounded almost as good as Apollo himself. Persephone loved the singing and playing so much that she persuaded Hades to give Eurydice back to Orpheus.
  • Hades had one condition to the return of Eurydice, Orpheus could not look at her before they exit the underworld. After Eurydice was returned, Orpheus guided her through the underworld without looking at her. She had a hard time keeping up because her foot was still hurt. As they approached the exit of the cave, he forgot all about the condition and looked at Eurydice. As soon as he did a soul came and took Eurydice back to the underworld, and Orpheus live out the rest of his days sad.
