  • The Power of Love
  • Family and Obligation
  • Violence and Death
  • At the heart of Shakespeare's classic tragedy is an exploration of the all-consuming nature of love in all of its forms. In Romeo and Juliet, there are many love themes, but the most important one is the power of love. The story is propelled forward by Romeo and Juliet's love for one another, which is the driving force behind practically all of their decisions. This includes their decision to be married the day after they first sat down with each other. Both the play's joy and its sorrow may be traced back to the central topic of love.
  • Families are a common topic throughout the story of Romeo and Juliet, and this is shown in the individuals' desire to serve their families. When Romeo and Juliet first meet, the fact that they come from competing families is enough to put their romance at risk. After this tragedy, Juliet hopes she could change his name for their love.
  • Throughout the play, there is a constant undercurrent of violence and death. Romeo and Juliet is a story of brutality that appears to go on for eternity. The cycle of violence and retribution is essentially broken by Romeo's death; he has murdered the murderer of Tybalt. Juliet commits herself after watching Romeo's death, making her the ultimate victim of the feud between her family and that of the Capulet family.
