- The food is delicious! I wonder what is happening to the food inside my stomach!
- Hello there! I am the enzyme Amylase. Enzymes biological catalysts that speeds up reactions without using itself up. I help with the process of breaking down starch! Without us, rice and other starch products would take weeks to get absorbed!
- I take in substances called substrates, and turn them into the end product!
- Substrate
- As you can see, the substrate starch can perfectly fit inside my mouth, otherwise called the active site. However, if another substrate like some other protein comes, it won't fit into the active site. This is enzyme specificity.
- Because the bonds between me and the substrate are so small, my active site changes its shape so that the substrate is stuck there. This is called induced fit
- After some time, I break down the substrates into end products. In this case, I am breaking down Starch molecules into maltose molecules.
