  • On March 2, 1836 a few days before the Alamo fell independence was declared from Mexico, for Texas. After the Alamo had fallen, Texans launched a surprise attack and killed more than six hundred soldiers. They captured many including General Santa Anna and got him to recognize Texas as a independent state. Texas built a temporary government and in September sent a representative to D.C. to ask to join the union. In the 1844 presidential election this played a huge role for who should win, as well as Manifest Destiny. The South wanted Texas to join the union, and after James K. Polk won, Texas officially joined the union.
  • General Taylor Drives Santa Anna's forces Deep into Mexico...Mexico City is taken Sept., 1847
  • Many conflicts developed when Mexico and United States had different ideas of where the Texas boarder was. Mexico believed it was The Nueces River one hundred and fifty miles north of the Rio Grande River, that is where the Americans believed the boarder was. The United States sent John Slidell to Mexico to propose a deal. He was told to offer 30 million for Rio Grande to be the boarder and for California. Mexico refused and Zachary Taylor was sent by the president to put pressure on Mexico. The United States declared war shortly after on April 25th.
  • Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (1848) ends the War & Gives the U.S. 500,000 sq. miles of territory
  • On June 14,1846, California officially declared independence as The Bear Republic. They where an individual nation for a very short time. After a month the United States arrived and overcame California. They forced California to join the United States and be another state in that republic.
  • Gasden Purchase Allows the U.S. to Purchase even more of Mexico's Land in December,1853
  • The United States had three goals in the war, they wanted to push Mexcian forces out of Texas. As well as that they wanted to gain California and New Mexico for the United States. The last phase of the plan was to capture Mexico city. In the beginning of the war General Taylor drove out mexican forces in New Mexico and California. He drove out General Santa Anna and all his troops. His army captured many other major cities on the Mexico and Texas boarder. The United States Army captured New Mexico's capital , the governor fled to Clifornia.
  • The war ended on February 2, 1848 when Mexico finally signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Mexico gave up over 50,000 square miles of land in the Mexico Cession. The states where California, Nevada, Utah, some parts of Colorado and Wyoming, and most of Arizona and New Mexico. Also in the Treaty Mexico accepted the Rio Grande as the border of Mexico and the United States. The United States payed $15 million and ended all debt with Mexico. 
  • 5 years after the Mexico and American war had ended, the United States bought even more of the Mexican Land. This was called the Gasden Purchase it was $10 million dollars for a small part of land in Arizona and New Mexico. With this last purchase the United States officially reached Manifest Destiny.
