- Fought from 1895 to 1898. Was the last of three liberation wars that Cuba fought against Spain. The Cubans gained independence but the Filipinos did not. In 1895 the Cuban patriot and revolutionary Jose Marti resumed the Cuban struggle for freedom that failed during the Ten Years War (1868-1878).

- Americas Imperial era in Cuba lasted only about 30 years. Franklin D. Roosevelt came into office in 1933 wanting to end Americas experiment with imperialism and began unwinding US control over Cuba and the Philippines. The US helped Cuba win independence from Spain during imperialism. Cuban rebels had won control of most of the land, forced the hungry and disease plagued Spanish army to withdraw into guarded enclaves and made plans to attack Santiago and other cities

- WHO SUNK THE USS MAINE?1889
- The Maine explodes in Havana Harbor, killling 266 men. According to the US Navy, the explosion was caused by the denotation of a mine under the ship. The US didnt directly blame Spain according to an official US Naval Court of Inquiry. Much of Congress and a majority of the American public expressed little doubt that Spain was responsible and called for a declaration of war.

- The most famous of all units fighting in Cuba, the "Rough Riders" was the name given to the First US Volunteer Calvary under the leadership of Theodore Roosevelt and composed of cowboys, miners, law enforcement, officials, and college athletes. The Rough Riders played a key role in the outcome of the Spanish-American War by assisting the american forces in forming a constricting ring around the city of Santiago de Cuba.

- The Philippines American War lasted three years and rebuttal in the death of over 4200 American and 20,000 Filipino combatants. The US drive to extend influence across the Pacific instigated a v American War. Fighting broke out on February 4, 1899 and eventually far exceeded that against Spain

- Theodore Roosevelt negotiated the Hay-Bunau Varilla Treaty giving the US control of the canal zone. Work under US supervision began in 1904 and the Panama Canal was completed in 1914. Tens of thousands of people mostly labourers from Barbados, Martinque and Guadelupe worked on the project.
