- Madison was hesitant to declare war on Britain, he did it because he didn't want to be the first president to abandon Washington's policy of neutrality and isolationism. British eventually convinced Madison to go to war by supplying native americans with guns and ammo, and not stopping impressment.
- War in the East - Attack on Baltimore
- The British and Americans both believed the Great Lakes where the key to the Northwest Region. At Lake Erie, the Americans outbuilt the British and defeated them. William Henry Hamson defeated the British in the battle of Thames.
- War in the South
- As the British approached Washington D.C, Madison ordered to have all government papers to be removed from buildings. The British then forced them to retreat, and they burned the main government buildings. Later, a hurricane which lead to a tornado, drove the British out of Washington D.C..
- Effects of the War
- Two weeks after capturing Washington DC, the British turned their attention to Baltimore for impressment. 1,500 exploding cannonballs were shot at Ft. McHenry. Sam Smith was incharge of Baltimore, and George Armistead was incharge of the defences at McHenry. A woman named Mary Hickersale was asked to make two flags for the Fort, the largest of the two flags was 30 x 42 feet.
- Andrew Jackson stopped the British by leading an army towards the Gulf Coast. He defeated the Southwest Indians in the battle of horseshoe Bend by getting Native American allies and trapping them. He also defided James Monroe who headed him to stay out of Florida during the attack on British they withdrew. The Britished then surrendered. In New Orleans, French Pirate Jean Lafitte ordered an army of slaves.
- The effects of the war concluded, the indian tribes near the Mississippi were subdued and subsided, they also restablished diplomatic ties between the U.S and Britain.
