  • Once I conceived the idea of murdering the old man, the thought haunted me day and night.

  • The antagonist in the story is the narrator. He begins the story by telling his audience that he is not crazy, and will prove his sanity by calmly telling us how wise and cunning he was in planning and carrying out the murder of the old man. He tells the listener that his motive for murderer is the old mans "vulture eye".

  • The narrator (antagonist) is now explaining how throughout the past week he has been watching the old man sleep. He also has been asking him how he slept and being kind to the old man. Through this past week, he has been very profound of what to say to him and what not to say. The narrator was always trying to see whether the old mans "vulture eye" was open or not.

  • Hello. Your neighbors reported a loud shrieking sound and told me to come check up on the house.
  • At this point in time, the old man had laughed at the old mans terror and fright. The old mans derision was shining through. The old mans "vulture eye" is finally open. The narrator became frightened that the old mans heartbeat was beginning to be too loud. He feared that the neighbors could hear his heartbeat.
  • resolution
  • The old man became more and more vexed as time went on committed the murderer. The narrator felt it was a very sufficient time and smothered the old man with a mattress.
  • Finally the job is over.
  • After the narrator chopped up the body parts into the tub, and put them under the wood, police show up to his house vehemently. The reason of them showing up was due to the neighbors hearing a loud shriek. He sat the police down in the old mans room, right above the body parts under the wood. His anxiousness builds up. The narrator begins to hear a certain noise that he claims is the old mans heartbeat. In reality it is his own, but as he gets more anxious he begins to have a feeling of guilt.
  • The narrator gets more and more anxious. He finally gained the audacity tell to the police that he is the murderer of the old man.
