- One of the more tender moments of the book is when Mo recalls the advice the Colonel gave her one night while they are camping under the stars. She remembers this moment when she is worried about losing both her adoptive parents. After losing her "upstream mother" at birth, Mo is worried she will end up alone. Remembering the Colonel's advice brings her comfort and solace. Later, when the reader learns that the Colonel suffered from amnesia since the night he found Mo in the hurricane, the quote brings on an even deeper meaning as we know that the Colonel needed to heed that advice himself when he was struggling to figure out his identity and purpose in life.
