FAMILY
Jude's home in Syria is by the sea. The ocean symbolizes beauty and tranquility and the comfort of home. Jude describes the sights and smells and appeal of her hometown, which is also a popular tourist destination and a place where Syrians and people from all over the world come to relax and enjoy the scenery.
Jude is forced to leave her beloved home in Syria due to the civil war. She knows that she is lucky to be able to go to live with her Uncle Mazin. Her Aunt Michelle is kind and welcoming and soon she begins to see the house in Clifton as home too. This is comforting and conflicting. She comes to the realization that there can be room for more than one home in your heart without sacrificing your love for the other.
The love and strength of family is a central theme. Jude's family makes the sacrifice of sending Jude and her pregnant mother to the U.S. for their safety during the war. Despite separation, they never stop missing one another and do everything they can to stay in touch such as using the internet to video chat. Jude's Uncle Mazin and his wife and daughter also become close family for Jude, supporting her and helping her navigate a new school, language, and culture.
