In 1867, the Dominion of Canada included four provinces: Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, and Ontario. Dominion was used by the British to describe their colonies or territorial possessions.
The North-West Mounted Police (Later the Royal Canadian Mounted Police) were established in 1873 and are a federal police force.
The 49th Parallel North is the longitudinal line that was the border between much of the United States and Canada since 1818. It spans from the Great Lakes to the Rocky Mountains. It extended to the Pacific Ocean in 1846 with the Oregon Treaty.
