Europeans traded with Indigenous people for beaver pelts in Canada. The immense popularity of European felt hats drove the business. Beavers in Europe were hunted to near extinction but Canada had plenty!
The major players were the First Nations, the French, and the British. The French traded with First Nations such as Huron and Algonquin for beaver pelts. The British traded with First Nations such as those in theHaudenosaunee Confederacy. These would become important alliances.
The Fur Trade stretched throughout Canada and the Northern United States in regions like the Great Lakes and Hudson Bay, Rupert's Land”, and the North-West Territories”.
The fur trade began in the 1600s and lasted for more than 250 years!
The French and British wanted to make money from the fur trade and control the land while First Nations sought to maintain their land rights and heritage. The fur trade was the most important industry in the region and it increased the wealth and power of those that controlled it.
The fur trade was one of the main reasons that Europeans explored and colonized Canada. With it came new settlers, missionaries, and Britain, France and the Indigenous Peoples vying for control over the land.
