Why is there a warrant for her arrest!?
It's not mine!! Mary warren gave it to me!!
Tituba and Abigail dance in the woods trying to conjure the spirits of Mrs. Putnam's dead children. She lost seven children in childbirth. Parris sees them dancing and disperses them.
Marry Warren testifies
We were pretending to be witches
Giles says he can't pray when my wife is home reading strange books. He only succeeded when she closed the book and left the house. Hale listens closely to Giles and remarks that they will have to discuss this matter later. Giles get alarmed, worried that his wife will be named as a witch. He only wanted to know what she is reading and why she hides the books.
Abigail denies Marry's charge that they are lying
Mary, show us how you can pretend to faint.
Hale presses Tituba to open herself to God and to accuse some people as serving the devil. Mrs. Putnam insists Goody Osborne who midwifed three of her still births is a witch.
Elizabeth is always honest
Why did you fire Abigail? Do not look at your husband .
Marry gives Elizabeth a doll that she sewed in court. She says that thirty-nine people are now accused as witches. She also tells Elizabeth that her name was mentioned.
Giles pressed to death
I will not submit myself to lies!!
Hale asks why the Proctors don't often attend church and also why there youngest son is not baptized. He is not satisfied with their answer, and orders them to recite the ten commandments.
Proctor's confession
Ezekiel Cheever, the town marshall barges into the Proctor's house with a warrant. Abigail had charged Elizabeth with stabbing her with a needle by using the poppet as a magical instrument.
Proctor is hanged
Make him confess it is not worth dying for!
Judge Danforth is shocked by Marry Warren stating that she and the girls only play acted as witches. He wants to know if Proctor has revealed this to the rest of the people. Parris believes anyone who contradicts the court is trying to undermine it. The judge is concerned with Proctor's religious observant as if this is more important then any charge of misrepresentation.
Proctor why won't you go to church?
He plows on Sunday.
They want to overthrow the court!
Abigail contradicts Mary's charges and puts Elizabeth Proctor in deep trouble. She denies any knowledge of the poppet. In order to prove that Mary was only pretending to see spirits, the court asks her to faint right now in front of them She cannot, and that is proof that her charges are false.
I didn't put a needle in the poppet.
I can't, I can't!!
Proctor charges that Abigail wants Elizabeth to die so she can be his wife. Danforth sets a test to determine if Proctor is telling the truth. He orders Elizabeth into the room and to tell the reason why she sent Abigail out of her home. Elizabeth fails to fully explain what happened and makes it appear that her husband is lying. Hale now understands what is really happening but cannot convince the court.
Danforth, Abigail is false.
I thought he liked her, but I fired her without just cause.
Giles is in a predicament. He cannot admit to the charge, because the court would have hanged him and he would've lost his property. Because he wouldn't answer the court, it shows the horrible punishment of pressing a person with weight until he would speak. In the end Giles preferred to get pressed to death rather than admit anything.
Confess to being a wizard!!
More weight
Confess to your guilt!!
Proctor gives in to the pressure exerted on him by Danforth. However, his conscience doesn't allow him to go through with it. The judges want him to name other people who consorted with the devil. Proctor will only admit to his own sins.
Follow your conscience, John!!
If you don't sign the confession you will hang!!
Proctor refused to allow the judges to nail his confession on the church door. He snatched it from them and tears it in half. Danforth calls the marshall to lead the prisoner to the galows to hang.
I will not sway him from doing what he thinks is just!!
