  • There are many new noises newborns might've never heard and are now introduced to. This might startle them and cause them to cry. Babies from newborn to 3 months of age are able to recognize mother's voice and will stop crying when she talks to him/her. Babies will also make cooing sounds, smile, and have different cries for different needs (American Speech Language Hearing Association, n.d.).
  • Infants take notice of toys with sound and when happy will babble word like sounds such as pa, ma, ba (American Speech Language Hearing Association, n.d).
  • At around 7 months to 1 year of age, infants will begin to use 1 to 2 words to communicate and they understand common words. According to American Speech Language Hearing Association (n.d.), infants use sounds to get adult's attention although they might not sound as clear or understandable.
  • Adaline's mom reads her a book before bed time and simple things as such can help baby Adaline learn and hear new words. Listening to infants, responding to them, and imitating the same noises they make is also good for them. Parents can also teach their infants simple animals sounds, or talk about what they are doing at the moment (American Speech Language Hearing Association, n.d.).
  • Children ages one to two beginning to learn a lot of words and will even begin to name things such as body parts. Parents can help expands their infant's vocabulary by reading to them, explaining every day activities as they are doing them, and practice naming things in pictures (American Speech Language Hearing Association,n.d.).
  • Children ages two to three will begin to understand simple instructions, question things, ask for things, and will have a word to describe almost everything they see (American Speech Language Association, n.d.). It is important for parents to continually read to them and teach them new words. A fun activity may be placing things in a bag or box and having your child name each one of them as they come out. Parents can also sing nursey rhymes and play small games.
  • Children ages three to four can answer simple questions, can say simple rhymes, use pronouns, use plural words, and ask when and how questions (American Speech Language Hearing Association, n.d.). According to the American Speech Language Hearing Association children at this age will also put four words together and four sentences at a time. They can also talk about what went on during the day and what they did. A great way for children to practice talking would be role playing .
  • According to the American Speech Language Hearing Association (n.d.), children from ages four to five will keep a conversation going and can event tell a short story. Parents should pay attention to their children and actively engage in conversation wit them. This is a great way to let them know that you are listening and will encourage them to keep taling.
