- The Younger family resided on Chicago's South Side. The family was made up of Mama, Walter, who was Mama's son, Ruth, who was Walter's wife, and Beneatha, who was Mama's daughter.
- Climax
- Following the passing of their father, they are given a $10,000 life insurance payout. What to do with the money is a point of contention. Walter wants to invest in a liquor store in an effort to increase his revenue. Ruth agrees with Mama's desire to use the money to purchase a new, larger home. Beneatha wants it to help pay for her medical education.
- Falling Action
- In an entirely white neighborhood, Mama purchases the home. She saves some cash for Walter and Beneatha to spend for their aspirations. An individual by the name of Karl Lindner offers them money so they will leave the area and not stay there.
- Resolution
- The person in charge of organizing the acquisition of the liquor store, Bobo, told Walter that his future business partner, Willy Harris, had defrauded him and fled the scene with all of his money. Walter also selfishly seized his sister's half of the money since he wanted to put everything into the shop.
- Walter chooses to accept Karl's invitation to leave the area. Mama was shocked by this because she knew it would make him and the family lose their pride and diminish their right to remain in a predominantly white area.
- Karl is dealt with by Walter. In the midst of their conversation, he decides that his pride is too great to give up and declines Karl's invitation. The family makes the decision to relocate. Just before departing, Mama looks back at her house and takes a plant to signify the family's newfound optimism.
