- The journey to the Presidency begins with a candidate's campaign to win the nomination of their party to run for the general election on behalf of them. These selections are made by party delegates who choose a nominee based on the public opinion of the said nominee (a popular vote in each state)

- Once the presidential candidate secures support from their party in their run for president, they begin campaigns. Generally, candidates campaign in areas which they most require support from in the election, that is places with the highest populations in which they can reasonably gain the most positive public opinion of. Campaigning involves many tactics used to gain public opinion. Candidates may give speeches to target audiences, invest in television, newspaper, and radio ads promoting their campaign,

- The campaign eventually culminates on election day, when citizens across the country make their decision on who they believe should be president.The collective decision of the populace is known as the popular vote. Although the popular vote (somewhat) accurately reflects the country's opinions on the candidates, the final decision is ultimately made by the electoral college: the 435 representatives and 100 senators that make up the legislative branch, along with 3 representatives of the District of Columbia. That's not to say the popular vote is useless, however, as the electoral college votes are commonly based upon the state's popular vote that the elector represents. With a total of 538 electoral votes, the election requires a count of 270 votes on a candidate to win the election.
