  • In the late 19th century and the early 20th century, Russian workers suffered from poor working conditions. They had no say in their whatsoever the Tsar did which was an absolute monarchy. They were overworked and had unsanitary conditions. Unions were banned so there were no worker rights or protection. There was also limited running water in the cities which lead to the sickness and death of many. Farmers had no property over their own land nor any civil rights. Workers were mistreated in the workforce and many were abused.
  • World War I
  • In 1905 Tsar Nicholas II implemented reforms such as basic civil rights such as freedom of expression, Universal suffrage, and the creation of an elected legislative assembly- Duma. Although these reforms were implemented, they did not satisfy the citizens in Russia. There were protests and worker strikes which was the start of the Russian revolution.

  • Shortly after Tsar Nicholas II implemented his new reforms workers began to revolt. Workers in cities were striking due to working conditions and wanted change. A petition went around and over 150,000 workers signed a petition and marched down to get Tsar Nicholas II to sign it. However, soldiers assumed it was a threat and 200 people were killed. This was known as bloody sunday. It was the start of the 1905 Russian Revolution.

  • When World War I happened famine spread across Russia. There was food shortages and there were many work strikes that happened during the war. Since the Tsar was an absolute monarchy they had poor leadership skills and did not help Russia at all during the War. Many loses were accounted for during the war.

  • Since Russia's involvement in the war was unpopular there was little food supply. There were many strikes and riots within the cities. People demanded to have more rights and were more violent when there were food shortages. The Tsar was violently murdered due to the discontent in the country.
  • NO MORE WORK UNTIL MORE RIGHTS!
  • Lenin came to the rescue introducing communism and liberal ideas to help save Russia and its citizens. The Bolshevik Red army won the cicil war that held Russia from 1917- 1922. Lenin and his Bolshevik army took over the government position and declared Russia a comminist country. Russia is newly known as the United Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR). Lenin gained support from the peasants and soldiers by promising "land, peace, bread"
