- In The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street by Rod Serling, one of the main themes is 'Man kind is its own worst enemy' On page #679, Charlie and everyone on maple street heard foot steps. They all thought it was the monster. Charlie takes the gun from Steve shoot the unknown figure, just to find out it's Pete Vanhorn. Charlies fright got the best of him, which caused an innocent man to die. On page #680, everyone starts turning on Charlie. They ask why he's the only one with lights on. They start gathering evidence saying he was quick to shoot, lights on, how he must've shot to keep his secret. Everyone turned on Charlie, they chased, shot, tackled, fought and grabbed him, hurting Charlie with inferences assumptions. On page #682, Every person on maple street has gone crazy. There are guns fired, punches, hit by hammers, etc. Every wrong move on a house or person will make them a suspect. They went crazy beating everything that was out of the ordinary, item or human. Maple street will tear each other apart till they get an answer. Even though they don't realize they're the answer and the problem, each one of them was the monster.
