We don't want you as our king!
In 1073, Pope Gregory VII declared that emperors are not allowed to appoint members of the clergy. He believed only Popes had the authority to do so.
Please forgive me!
You are forgiven, but you cannot resume your role as King
Henry IV did not listen. He publicly called the Pope a "false monk" and continued to appoint church officials
The Pope excommunicated Henry for not listening to his orders. The nobles took the Pope's side because they were afraid they wouldn't get into heaven if they went against the Pope
The new pope and the next King have come to a compromise and signed this treaty
Henry is desperate and powerless, so he decided to go to the Pope and beg for forgiveness. The Pope forgave him, but he does not regain his title of King or Holy Roman Emperor.
Although Henry and Gregory's dispute was settled, the debate over who is qualified to appoint officials continued for many years.
Finally, in 1122 a treaty called the Concordat of Worms was signed by the next king and new Pope. This states that the church officials alone would have the authority to elect clergy members, while the king would bestow feudal titles and land grants for them
