  • Hello Brent, my name is Mathew, and I am going to be your social worker. As your social worker, I will support you on your journey in any way I can, whether that’s advocating for your rights/needs, looking for new opportunities, or even obtaining financial aid.
  • Hello Mathew, I appreciate your willingness to support me. It makes me happy someone has finally reached out to help, it gives me some hope for the future. Life on Victor Street has been really hard, and sometimes makes you lose hope.

  • I believe everyone is deserving of respect, equality, and freedom (Canadian Association, 2024), and I don’t feel you have been getting that. So, it brings me great joy having the opportunity to be your social worker, and being able to rekindle your hope.

  • Before we start talking, I understand you may not feel comfortable sharing everything with me as we just met. But know our conversations are a safe space for you, so don’t be afraid to talk about anything, I will not judge you or make you feel bad about anything, and nobody else will know what you tell me as it will be kept confidential unless you or another person is at risk of harm. So, I encourage you to be open, as this will not only improve our working relationship but also my chances of success in helping you (Ngo, 2020).
  • That is comforting to know, what should I talk about first?
  • Csúszik: 4
  • You can talk about anything you want, what’s been bothering you, personal events you have experienced, or even where you would like to be by the end of all this.

  • Well, it feels like the police around here are not doing their job, where they don’t spend much time around here, and criminals tend to get away with a lot of things. My house is constantly being vandalized by gangs, and I had to quit my job out of fear for my safety. Daily life is also hard because I try to stay away from all the addiction, violence, and gangs by playing football. But I couldn’t play football at school this year because of my age, and my family is unable to afford the few football opportunities that are around here, so I usually go watch football practices instead.

  • Nobody should ever have to live in fear, and I want to say I am proud of you for having the strength to go outside of norms. I can advocate for policy change that will increase police presence and require them to be thorough in their investigations. I also can connect with other communities to find potential football opportunities, and I can obtain financial aid so your able to play. I will keep you anonymous in all of this, and I will not take any action unless I have your informed consent(Canadian Association of Social Workers, 2024).
  • Yes you have my consent.
