- Reaction formation is a defense mechanism where a person reacts to an unwanted feeling by expressing the exact opposite emotion. Here, the worker is angry with his boss's suggestion, but he thanks him for the feedback.

- Regression is the return of a person's behavior to a previous stage of life when faced with an unwanted feeling. Here, the boy is feeling anxious and jealous of the attention his brother is getting, so he starts wetting the bed again.

- Rationalization is a defense mechanism where the person makes a logical explanation to justify mistakes and unwanted/conflicted behavior. For example, this boy rationalizes his behavior by arguing that he'll only play for 1 more hour, and that the test will be easy tomorrow.
- I'm only going to play for 1 more hour! Besides, tomorrow's test can't be that hard. How hard can Chemistry be anyway!
