  • Language development begins at birth and possibly while in utero. Infants are able to recognize their mother's voice. Infants babble and speak a few words between 0-12 months.

  • Children ages 0-3 need adequate exposure to language to develop proper vocabulary and grammar.

  • As children get older their vocabulary grows with them. By 18 months children can say around 20 words which are usually nouns they use frequently and are often used by those around them.

  • Between 24-36 months children begin fast mapping and their vocabulary builds to approximately 150-300 words
  • By 36 months children begin using verbs and can form simple sentences that include nouns and prepositions. Grammar is not always correct.

  • At age 3 children begin learning around 5 new words a day. The child is using nouns, pronouns, verbs and prepositions. The child also begins bootstrapping words that they mentally associate together. Play and yard may become play-yard. Children can have simple conversations and respond to questions.
  • Okay doggy, let's play with the ball! Here we go! I throw!
  • Children learn to communicate through socializing with others. Preschool age children learn through roleplaying. Conversations with siblings and parents are also important to their language development. Children begin to add-ing to their verbs.
  • Hi Sarah! Do you want to play blocks with me and Jessica? We are building a castle! I am the hero!
  • At home and in school, children learn literacy which is reading and writing. Adults should correct grammar in order to ensure language skills are accurate. Recasts and expansions are both correction techniques.

  • As children continue to grow, interact with others, read, write and learn from their peers and adults, their vocabulary, literacy and language skills continue to advance.
  • Are you coming to my birthday party this weekend? It is at the arcade in town.
  • Yes, definitely! I will be there, and Jessica is coming with me.
