- The doctor comes and diagnoses Karli with a fever. The group stays at the mistress’s mansion for a couple weeks until Karli regains all of his strength.
- When Karli regains all of his strength, the mistress sends them off with supplies. The mistress asks them to also take a group of school children with them to the Americans.
- When they get to the camp, Marlene gets spooked by the weapons and runs off. The group looks for her but can’t find her. The Americans bring Mutti, Karli, and Lizzie to a refuge camp. Before they were sent off, they got a chance to say goodbye to Peter, who went to live in London. Peter gave Lizzie his address and t promised to come back for her. After about 6 months in the camp, Mutti arranged for them to live with Mutti’s cousin in Heidelberg.
- After a while, Peter’s letters stopped coming, which broke Lizzie’s heart. The family soon found out that Papi was alive, but in a Russian camp. Karli and Lizzie went back to school, and Mutti taught there. When they were walking back from school one day, they saw Peter on their doorstep. Everyone was overjoyed. Lizzie and Peter got married and moved to Canada. Mutti, Papi, and Karli joined them a couple years later.
- Several years later, Lizzie, Peter, and Karli went to a circus that was in town. There they saw Marlene performing! After the show, they went backstage to talk to the headmaster. The headmaster said that they bought her from another circus 10 years ago and said that she was the most gentle elephant they had seen.
- Lizzie finishes the story and gives Karl Peter’s compass. His mother tries to protest but Lizzie ignores her. Karl and his mother promise to bring her picture book the next day.
