- Scene 1: Sees two women
- Hi, I'm Leo, would it be okay to ask some questions to both of you?
- Yes, sure. I'm Alia!
- Of course! I'm Abby!
- Scene 2: Asks a question to Alia
- Have you ever experienced judgement?
- Absolutely, yes! I've experienced getting stared at because of my hijab and the clothes I wear.
- Scene 3: Asks another question
- Since you mentioned about your hijab, what do you think the reason of people staring at your hijab?
- I think it's because hijab is not a normal piece of clothing to their culture and not the standard clothing they see everyday.
- Leo, a youtube vlogger, that interviews strangers, saw 2 women and instantly think that he could ask them to be part of his content called, 'globalization of beauty standards'. This simply means that beauty is being seen as 'perfect' . Beauty is being redefined as someone who's fit or have the 'perfect body', someone who has light skin, or someone who has the 'Western' image. People are not accepting who they are and the culture they were born into.
- Scene 4: Interview Abby
- Have you ever felt like you were being controlled by society on what you should be?
- I've felt that I have to be light skinned and wear trendy clothes that I can't afford, to be called beautiful.
- People think that being beautiful means wearing western style clothes, or having a certain look that people are familiar with, and people will judge you for that because it's not something they use in their culture, which we call it ethnocentrism. Ethnocentrism is judging another culture because it didn't meet your own standard.
- Scene 5: Questions her about beauty standards
- Have you ever tried products in hope of getting the standardized beauty?
- Honestly, yes, I've tried a few products, like whitening cream because a famous actor used it.
- Leo proceeded with another question about her hijab and in which she said, because of her hijab, people make her feel like she's violating a norm by getting stared at and getting judged by people on the street. Norm is the accepted ways of doing things.
- Scene 6: Asks last question to both women
- What does beauty mean for both of you?
- Beauty is someone who wears expensive clothes
- For me, beauty means having a 'model' type body, a 'model' type face, and being light skinned.
- People nowadays, especially teens or even kids, have felt the same thing as Abby. They wear clothes that are similar or what actors and models wear. However, being trendy also means buying expensive clothes. But, the idea of 'Mcdonalization of Society' came to mind, but in beauty. Mcdonalization simply means that the principles of fast food are dominating the society. This idea portrays some people nowadays, they buy trendy clothes that are cheaper because they can't afford it, instead of the expensive oncs, just to be able to look beautiful.
- Abby uses products because she saw a famous person used it. This shows consumerism, which is defining ourselves in terms of the goods and services we purchase. Abby feels beautiful because someone beautiful uses it.
- As Alia and Abby finished answering the questions, Leo realized that, that was their values. Their values were that you're beautiful when you have been westernized and you're ugly when you don't meet the standards of others. Values is the ideas about what's right and wrong, good and bad, desirable and undesirable, beautiful and ugly.
