  • That's right, we are citizens too This treatment is unfair!
  • People of color started to get tired of being segregated against, and not given any rights. They began to disobey and advocate for them themselves in little groups.
  • Yea, we should do something about it!
  • Listen, now I need you to move to to back! If you don't I will call the police!
  • Step 1: Agitation, Rosa Parks refusing to sit in the back, 1955
  • No, you may call them if you like.
  • Rosa Parks, motivated by Emmett Till, refused to sit in the back of the bus. This was the start of the Bus Boycott.
  • Step 2: Legitimation, Montgomery Bus Boycott 1955-1956
  • My name is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I will be leading the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which was made possible due to the efforts of Rosa parks
  • Dr. King along with others, began to organize official boycotts and non-violent protests. The Civil Rights Movement gained more media attention, and gained leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
  • Step 3: BureaucratizationMarch on Washington / "I Have a Dream" speech, 1963
  • I am joined by thousands of colored people who, like me, have a dream for equality in this nation!
  • The day that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led an organized march on Washington and gave his "I Have a Dream" speech.
  • Step 4: Institutionalization,President Lyndon B. Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act of 1968
  • President Lyndon B. Johnson signed many Civil Rights acts. Including the last act in the Civil Rights movement, the Civil Rights Acts of 1968. This is ultimately what officially ended the movement, but colored people are still fighting for equality today.
