  • Hello Class, Today we have a new student named Hannah. Our new friend is deaf and so today we will be learning about American Sign Language.
  • Tommy decided to introduce himself to Hannah, and he also wanted to practice his sign language although he only knew a few words he knew she could read lips.
  • Thank you, you did a great job with the signs you know! I can read lips very well, thank you for speaking a bit slower and using your expressions to help me understand.
  • Hey Hannah, I hope your enjoying school, I think it's pretty cool we all get to learn sign language.
  • Today the teacher set up some games that don't require any hearing, she also assigned a fellow classmate named Suzie to help Hannah with the games and get her more comfortable with her surroundings. Suzie's mom is also deaf so she knows sign language.
  • Deaf and hard of hearing students face many challenge's in the classroom environment:1. Classroom Chaos: rows of desks can make it visually hard for a deaf person to understand what is being taught, switching the desks into a u shape where everyone can be seen can help a lot.2. Fitting in: Large group sizes can often be to much for anyone with a significant challenge such as hearing loss, often they don't want to draw attention to themselves. Smaller groups can help ease the pressure of socializing.3. Face Time: Teachers or classmates can talk very fast about assignments or other ideas and someone who is hard of hearing can have a hard time understanding what is being said, a teacher handing out notes for a child who is hard of hearing can help them understand what is going on.
  • Today Hannah's mom is going to be talking to Hannah about her IEP program that she will be starting at school. Telling her that this program is there to help her and guide her through early school career. Early Intervention Program's can include speech pathology practices, vision therapy, occupational therapy, family training and couceling, and much more.
