Storyboard Szöveg

  • Hello I am Jessica and today I will be preparing a high carb meal. I will also be explaining how I digest it.
  • Here I have prepared spaghetti.
  • Here I have a plate of spaghetti. When you take a bite you have already started the digestion process, as the first step begins in the mouth. You break down the food in your mouth by chewing. There is also something called salivary glands that make saliva. Saliva helps food move easily through your esophagus, which brings us to our next step the stomach.
  • Believe it or not carbs are not broken down in the stomach. Carbs are actually broken down in the small intestine. After moving through the stomach the carbs enter the duodenum. The pancreas then releases an enzyme called pancreatic amylase, which breaks the polysaccharide down into disaccharide. After that is complete the small intestine produces lactase, sucrase, and maltase, which are enzymes that break down the disaccharides into monosaccharides.
  • Now we have reached the final parts of digestion, which takes place in the colon. Any carbs that were not digested and absorbed by the small intestine are taken to the colon, where they are broken down by intestinal bacteria. Fiber cannot be digested like other carbohydrates (carbs), so it leaves the body when you use the bathroom or is digested by intestinal bacteria.
  • That is how carbohydrates are digested. I hope that was helpful.
