Storyboard Szöveg

  • Mama made sure I was never hungry. She set up an account for me at the corner grocery. So, if I was hungry the grocer would just put it on her account. That is until I used the account to get all the chocolate I could eat for me and my friends.
  • My name is Walter Dean Myers and I was born in Virginia. I was adopted at the age of 3 by Herbert and Florence Myers. Herbert was black and Florence was white.
  • I grew up in magical Harlem New York. Harlem had busy streets, great music, and colors and smells that filled my sense. I loved walking to Sunday school while singing, "Yes Jesus Loves Me".
  • My mother kept a spotless house. She cleaned peoples apartments for work. A lady in our building would watch me while mama was at work. Her kids were so mean to me.
  • What I loved most about Harlem was the music. The girls in the street would not dance with me, so I danced by myself. I even made a dance up called "the boogie". People would through pennies at me when I danced. I would go and buy icy pops with them. One time I ate so much that I ended up in the hospital.
  • I began to realize that I had a problem speaking. I wanted to be like my mama so much. She taught me how to read using her True Romance magazines. I soon began to read to mama while she did house work. I was on my way!
  • When I first stared school I could read on a second grade level, but the teacher told my mom that I would have to start in the 1st grade. I could read good but I could not talk good. I once had to write 500 sentences for hitting a boy in the face for making fun of the way I spoke. I did not like to go to Speech Therapy because I thought I spoke fine. I really hated trying to pronounce those words!
  • It was April of 1945 and the end of 3rd grade. I had brought home a horrible report card. My worst grade was in Arithmetic. Mama was so upset. My sisters husband Frank who was a soldier and graduated from college offered to tutor me over the summer. Frank made me memorize all my math facts. I hate Math.
  • Fourth grade started of well that year, until I got into a fight with a boy named Bunny. Bunny was so afraid of me that he hit me twice before I could do anything. The teacher naturally blamed me and called me a bully in front of the class. I was so mad that I tried to throw a book in the corner that ended up hitting the teacher. My bad day turned into a bad night when I ended up in the hospital with a bad appendix. I had to have surgery right away to remove it. After surgery I had to stay in the house to heal. I snuck outside to ride my bike and ended up ripping my wound open. I ended up right back in the hospital. After all of this I was promoted to the 5th grade and moved to a new school. Wow!!
  • The summer of 1947 was very important to blacks across the country. Blacks were beginning to be treated as equals. Jackie Robinson and Larry Doby were accepted into Major League baseball, and Sugar Ray Robinson and Joe Lewis were boxing champs. President Harry Truman was even negotiating with some black leaders about letting blacks into the armed forces. The school and church that I went to was integrated, so I was not aware of race problem. Sometimes others black people would tell me stories about it.
  • That summer a number of unexpected people entered my life. George Myers my real father moved his family to Harlem a short distance from me. I met my bothers and sisters. My uncle Lee Dean, my adopted fathers brother finally got out of jail. Can you believe that me and my friends tried to lynch a boy named Richard in our churches basement. We all got beatings at home for doing that.We had read about it in a magazine and thought it was a good idea. When school opened in September, I attended my new school P.S. 43. Mrs. Conway was my new teacher.
  • Mrs. Conway started us reading in front of the class the first day of school. The first time I tried to read out loud in front of the class, a boy named Johnny Brown started laughing at me. I threw my book at him for that and had to stand in the closet for punishment. My speech problem made it hard for me to read in front of the class. I would usually get in trouble for hitting anyone who laughed at me. So, I was not allowed to read anymore. One day Mrs. Conway saw comic books on my desk and tore them up. Then she called me a bad bad boy. She then went to her closet and put one of her books on my desk. The book was a collection of Norwegian fairy tales. After reading the first poem, I feel in love with the book. The stories were magical and I realized that that I liked books. It was like finding a language clearer than the one I spoke. Mrs. Conway gave me another book after I finished that one. From that day on I realized that I liked Mrs. Conway. When we had to write poems she would always read mine to the class. I even had my poem put on the first page of our school paper. I was so excited that I ran all the way home to show mama! I even got a good report card!!!!!It was the best one I had ever got!
  • 125th Street in Harlem was the best! It had everthing like movies, shops, and best of all a library. Since I could not get any more books from Mrs. Conway, I started going to the library. I had to hide my books in a paper bag so the boys would not tease me. I felt that books filled the empty spaces in my life. I thought they were to special to fight over. I would spend hours in the library. At my new school, my teachers name was Mr. Irwin Lasher. He told me that I was put in his class because I liked to fight my teachers. One time I made a mistake and kicked him in the butt. He went home with me and then I did something stupid. I tried to hitch a ride on the back of a cab and really hurt my knees. I had hide the pain from mama for two weeks so she would not beat me.
  • By the summer of 1949, my two sister had moved out and I was changing. I realized that God wanted me to be a good person. I wanted to be a good person to. But, how could I and still have friends. Being a good reader separated me from the other kids. The night before my birthday party my uncle Lee was killed. My father did not want to talk much after that and my mother became depressed. I realized after this that the world doesn't revolve around me. Things were very different now. As the year went on Dad made an effort to come out of his depression. We started going on outings, like fishing. Dad would fish while me and mama would walk along the beach.
  • High school was not better. I was now over six feet tall. My school was an hour from my house. It was an all boy's school. The school was really rundown. I started going to school but soon stopped. I was not invited to parties because I was black. I started hanging in central park reading. I even meant a new friend named Frank. He was older than me and a drinker. He was put away when he was young for murdering 3 people. Mama did not like me being with him. When mama found out that I had been cutting school and sighing her name on letters, she was very mad. The school mama into getting some help for me. I ended up getting evaluated at Belview Hosipital. I had to regularly go and see Dr. Holiday. She was my therapist. I told her everything. I even stopped reading and writing. When I finally went back to school it was closed for the year. I had missed everything.
  • Since all my friends had moved on, I joined the Army when I turned 17. Mama was mad and sad. I started reading again in the army. I saw war in the army. After leaving the army, I had lots of different jobs. One day after working a construction job construction, I just wanted to start writing again. I started writing lots of poems. I started also ending them off to magazines to get them published. After awhile I did get some of them published. I also started writing children books. I was even able to publish one. I felt like a real writer who was now earning money for my work.
  • Back in Harlem, I started hanging with writers just like me. I even met James Baldwin. I loved his work. He had grew up in Harlem not far from me. I loved his poem, "Sonny's Blues. These were my type of people. The other writers would also give me great advice about my work. Being able to read good allowed me to get better jobs. I was becoming a good person again. In my heart I was always a good person.
  • I went to visit my parents who had moved to New Jersey. My dad never understood my world of writing and books because he could not read. I was so excited to show them my new book. When I got there I told them that I was finally a real writer. Writing was my job now. My dad did not think that writing was a good job for me. Mama was very proud and started telling her friends about me. They wanted me to tell them how I came up with the ideas for my books. I am finally happy about my self. Writings has finally let me into a world in which I am respected. I am finally in a world of book lovers. I am now a good person.
