Haiti is the most profitable island in the Americas due to its perfect climate for sugar cane. So as France does as per usual, they colonize it.

Mercantilism, is the idea that you get raw materials for $ (in this case it was sugar cane), process that material/make something out of it and sell it for $$$ (processed sugar).
France Loses
Toussaint L'ouverture was born into slavery but had access to books and education, so he was able to work his way out by his 30s. He was working his way to become a property owner. At the start of the revolution, Toussaint didn't join because he didn't want to get freed then have the chance of losing and never see the light of freedom again

The Haitian Revolution began in 1789. The amount of people fighting for it was just 1,000, but then increased to 20,000. In the revolt the people burned down almost 200 sugar cane farms, and over a combined 1,000 coffee farms and refineries where they previously worked.

After 12 years of the Haitian revolution, it was finally over. With the insane leadership if Toussaint, and some help from the DR side of the island with help supplying them with weapons. This was the first time in history a nation was under control by the enslaved.

In the constitution of 1801, Toussaint announced the islands independence, and made himself the governor for life. It abolished slavery forever and wanted to integrate a multiracial society.
