- "." The father is a very thoughtful character who hardly jumps to a decision quickly. He also doesn't change his mind when he makes a decision either. Because of this he tries to make the best decision possible and will often sit on an idea. So when the decision to leave Iowa came, he thought about it for weeks.
- .Lynn is a bossy character and will often tell Katie what to do. This quote represents that because she is telling Katie not to spend her money on treats. She is also very ambitious and wants to get a scholarship to college and become a famous writer. This quote shows her ambition because she wants to save up for a house earning 10 cents a day.
- Do you agree with me because I say so or because you really, truly, agree with me?
- I don't know.
- The Mother is very small and delicate. She is 4 feet 10 inches tall and once broke he leg when she fell down a single stair. She always tells her kids to be careful when they approach a stair. She is also very protective of her kids. She doesn't like letting them on the road even though barely anyone drove on it, and she didn't like it when they run around or play outside.
- "For a moment, I thought Uncle was going to cry." Uncle is an odd character and is always insistent on something he thinks is right. In this scene he is insisting that he can beat Lynn at chess, but he keeps losing. He is quick to make a decision and won't change his mind on it. He decided to buy an expensive marble chess set and insists that it is the chess set that he will beat Lynn with.
- Katie is very insistent on believing Lynn, because she thinks she's a genius and really looks up to her. One time Lynn asked her if she always said she agreed with her because she was the one who said it, or she actually agreed. Katie is also very innocent and will often never see a reason why people would wrong her. That is why Lynn sometimes has to have a serious talk with her.
