Growing up, many people have a clear sense of identity and heritage. However, my life has always been shrouded in mystery. My name is Isabella Webley, and I come from San Diego, California. Here is the story of how I discovered my true identity. Throughout my school years, I often felt like my peers had a strong sense of their roots and background, while I constantly questioned where I fit in my own family. The feeling of being different was always present, making me wonder why I didn't seem to belong like others did. It was a persistent sense of not quite fitting in, both at home and among my peers, that shaped my early understanding of identity and belonging. I have a younger brother, and our childhood was marked by our parents' divorce when we were very young. Growing up, I noticed a stark contrast between my brother and me: he closely resembled our parents, while I did not. With my darker complexion that hinted at Hispanic roots, I often wondered if there was a deeper mystery surrounding my appearance. This disparity in physical features fueled my curiosity about my own identity and background, especially considering my family's more typical Caucasian appearance. The questions about my heritage and sense of belonging persisted as I navigated through childhood and into adolescence.

When I turned 13, I discovered that my dad was not my biological father—he was my adoptive father. It was a profound revelation that rocked my understanding of family and identity. Processing this information was incredibly challenging; for years, I had sensed that something was amiss, but it wasn't until then that the truth came to light. Working through this realization with my mom was difficult and emotionally taxing. It stirred up considerable family drama, especially when I learned that everyone else in my family had known the truth except for my brother and me. Being the subject of a family secret rather than simply being aware of one was a heavy burden to bear, and overcoming the feelings of betrayal and confusion took time and introspection. From then on, I reached out to my biological father and discovered a wealth of information about my roots. My ancestry is a blend of English from my mom and Mexican-Spanish from my biological father. I was fascinated to learn that our family played a significant role in the founding of Carlsbad, California, and that we originally hailed from Guadalajara. Exploring our family tree revealed stories of perseverance and hard work to establish ourselves here, with extensive land and property holdings and relatives still residing in Guadalajara. Understanding my heritage brought me a deep sense of connection and pride in my family's journey and accomplishments.
Is something wrong with me?
