  • Son, take this medal and honor it by becoming a leader just like your father

  • I promise I will
  • We need meat!
  • We need shelter!
  • We really gotta work together
  • 5 years before the crash Ralph's father returns from leading a navy platoon in enemy territories and decides to have a discussion with his son. Due to Ralph's father being a leading figure in the military, he believes that his son Ralph must also become a leader and that it is in his blood. One of his father's favorite quotes to tell him was, "There are two types of people in this world. Sheep and sheepherders. One is the flock while the other controls it. For centuries our family has been the sheepherders and a guide to others. It is up to you to help those people and use your family gift that has been passed down from generation to generation". Ralph struggles with the thought of being a leader and feels that the leadership role was not meant for him but at the same time he does not want to disappoint his father. His father then hands him a medal that was a family heirloom and told him that he should think of him whenever he sees it.
  • Leave!
  • Currently, Ralph is facing a dilemma with the other boys on the island. Half of the boys believe that their priorities should be creating shelter to protect themselves while the other half believes they should spend their time hunting. Leading the boys who want the shelters, Ralph struggles to try to convince Jack and the other choir boys that shelter is more important than meat.
  • I gotta do something!

  • After countless weeks of arguing, Jack and his boys leave Ralph's group and decide that they will be better off on their own. They establish their camp not too far from Ralph and his boys but never the less Jack still wants nothing to do with Ralph. Although the two boys don't necessarily see eye to eye, Ralph believes that the group cannot survive while separated, and in order to overcome the island, they must all work together.
  • I won't let you down father!
  • Knowing that he must step up and bring the groups together, Ralph attempts to make amends with Jack and say that they can work together to accomplish both goals. Jack does not cooperate and demands that Ralph heads back to his side of the island. Shocked that Jack did not want to team up, Ralph knows that he must gain Jack back or else he does not want to know what Jack will do with his power.
  • Ralph returns to his camp and begins to panic. The littluns that supported Ralph are beginning to grow hungry since there is no one to gather meat for them and they are running low on berries. Ralph knows that everyone is counting on him to come up with a solution but he does not know what to do. He feels that he is letting the boys down and is scared that the boys might realize that he is an unfit leader and leave him as Jack did. The day is ending and the boys are starting to rest. Ralph knows that if he does not come up with a solution soon the boys might reject his orders.
  • Later that night just before he was about to go to bed, Ralph felt something sharp poke him as he laid down on the sand. He dug up the sand and was shocked to find the medal his father had given him 5 years ago. Ralph didn't know how it got there but he assumed that it was in his pocket during the crash and must have fallen out while he was on the island. Ralph observed the medal and felt as if a presence was watching over him as if his father was looking after him. He remembered what his father said when he gave it to him about how he should remember him and his leadership. Ralph understands now that he must be a leader. He must herd the sheep!
