The story of the Anklet

- 'Yes your highness. Let's go soldiers. Lead the way goldsmith.'
- The willy goldsmith, upon reaching the palace sought out to the king. After hearing what the goldsmith had to say, the king who was eager to appease his angry wife, didn't give much thought to the consequences of his actions. Having placed his trust in the goldsmith, he ordered his guards to go with the goldsmith to his hut.
- 'Set forth to the goldsmith's house. If you find the foot of the ornament of my queen in the possession of an expert thief, kill him, and bring the anklet to me.'
- 'O exalted one, the thief who stole from the palace is now staying in my lowly house, hiding himself from the watchmen of this city.'
- 'I shall seek retribution for the injustice meted out to my husband.'
- On hearing the news, Kannagi fainted. Upon regaining her consciousness, Kannagi took the remaining anklet as proof, and marched to the gates of the palace.
- 'Your husband was excuted by the palace guards. They were convinced that the anklet that he was trying to sell at the market was stolen from the queen, and so, the king ordered his death.'
- 'It is I who is the thief. The protection of my subjects has failed in my hands. Let me depart this life now.'
- While she was saying it, she broke the anklet that would prove her husband's innocence. Gems burst forth from the anklet. Realising that the king had committed an unforgivable crime he died after saying a few words. Seeing the king, the queen also gave up her life.
- 'It is not an injustice to put a thief to death, rather it is kingly justice.'
- 'Oh, how you have fallen! Here, in my hand, I hold the other anklet. The pair of the one that you falsely claim to have been stolen by my husband. Did you know that it contains gems within it?
- 'A man who had set out to sell a tinkling anklet was murdered by you, without a trial. I am his wife. I have come to seek justice.
