At the beginning of the story Evan is shy and invisible, he doesn't think that anyone knows who he is or even cares, and he doesn't put himself out there. But by the middle of the book, people start to notice him, and not for a good reason. Conner Murphy and Evan were not friends but everyone thinks they are best friends after something bad happened to Conner. In being his friend he is going to get the pity and the stares and he is no longer invisible. He is trying to run from this and trying to stay invisible because that's what he believes is right but the more and more attention like this he gets the more normal it becomes and he stops freaking out so much. Evan is used to the normal and doesn't want anything to change so when it does its going to take him some time to get used to it.
