- DENIAL
- Denial involves blocking external events from awareness. If some situation is just too much to handle, the person just refuses to experience it.For example, smokers may refuse to admit to themselves that smoking is bad for their health.
- Smoking isn't bad for you!
- I'm just a friend
- This involves individuals attributing their own unacceptable thoughts, feelings and motives to another person. A common example is a cheating spouse who suspects their partner is being unfaithful.
- PROJECTION
- I think you've been cheating on me!
- I'm not!
- Satisfying an impulse (e.g. aggression) with a substitute object. For example, someone who is frustrated by his or her boss at work may go home and kick the dog.
- DISPLACEMENT
- I hate my boss!
- I wet the bed. It's been years since I've done that.
- This is a movement back in psychological time when one is faced with stress. For example, an overwhelmed child may revert to bedwetting or thumb-sucking.
- REGRESSION
- It's ok, honey.
- Satisfying an impulse (e.g. aggression) with a substitute object. In a socially acceptable way. Sport is an example of putting our emotions (e.g. aggression) into something constructive.
- SUBLIMATION
- This is such a great way to relieve my stress.
