- It was the festival of spring. One little boy was between his father's legs, filled with life and laughter. ''Come, child, come'', called out his parents, as he lagged behind, fascinated by the toys. ''I want that toy'', he pleaded. His father looked at him red-eyed, in his familiar tyrant's way.
- Come child, come
- His mother gave him her finger to hold and said, ''look child, what is before you!'' It was a flowering mustard field. A group of dragonflies were bustling about. The child followed them in the air with his gaze. He almost caught one in his hands. Then his mother gave out a cautionary call: Come, child, come, come on to the footpath.
- When they reached the fair, the boy was fascinated. He saw a sweet seller, a flower seller, a man holding balloons and a snake charmer. He wanted to taste the barfi, buy a garland and wanted the balloon. He also wanted to listen to the snake charmer. But he knew that his parents wouldn't allow it.
- ''A garland of Gulmohur, a garland of gulmohur!''
- There was a roundabout in full swing. The child watched them intently and then he made a bold request: ''I want to go on the roundabout, please, Father, Mother.'' There was no reply. His parents weren't there. The boy started crying in fear, ''Mother, Father''.
- ''Mother, Father!"
- A man in the crowd heard his cry and with great difficulty, lifted him up in his hand. The man asked the child, ''How did you get here, child? Whose baby are you?''
- ''How did you get here, child. Whose baby are you?''
- The man tried to calm the child by taking him to the sweet seller, the flower seller, the man holding the balloons, the snake charmer and the roundabout, all the places where he wanted to go. But the child did not care, he only wanted his parents.
- ''I want my mother, I want my father!''
- Would you like a rainbow coloured balloon?
