Bay of Pigs Invasion Overview
How Castro Overthrew Batista
How Did The Citizens Feel?
What Reforms Did Castro Make?
So Why'd The U.S. Decide To Invade?
The Invasion
The Bay of Pigs Invasion was an attempt to push former Cuban President Fidel Castro out of power.
On Jan. 1st, 1959, Fidel Castro lead his army into the capital city, Havana. He began a guerrilla war with Batista's army.
The citizens were in support of Castro being the new president. General Batista was a corrupt and repressive dictator leader and the citizens much preferred Castro's methods.
Castro wasn't a fan of the American government controlling much of Cuba's economy and instead pushed for them to be more independent.
Castro eventually cut ties with the U.S and allied with the USSR. Because he fought back against American influence, President Eisenhower saw him as a threat to the nation, and ordered an attack.
With his army of 1,400 Cubans, newly elected President Kennedy authorized the invasion plans. Immediately everything went wrong, and the U.S army surrendered after under 24 hours of fighting.
I overthrew General Fulgencio Batista even though he is backed by the American Government. I am the new president!
Fidel Castro
Batista Castro
YAY CASTRO!
I have nationalized the sugar and mining industries to limit America's control.
There are 1,400 Cubans that came to America after Castro took over. If we trained them, we could plan an invasion.
President Eisenhower
They were expecting us! We've lost 114 men and we must surrender. Castro's army is too powerful
