Exposition: Montresor and Fortunato meet each other at a carnival. Montresor, with a murderous plan of revenge, begins to lead a drunk Fortunato to his house to find a cask of Amontillado.

I bought a cask of Amontillado but I don't know if it's authentic. I was going to go over to Luchesi's house to ask him about it.

Pffft. Luchesi can't tell Amontillado from Sherry! Let's go to your house and I'll determine if it's authentic. I insist! *hic!*

Rising Action: Montresor and Fortunato go to Montresor's house where they descend down into his basement. Fortunato's coughing makes Montresor offer to turn back, but Fortunato persists.

Enough! The cough is a mere nothing; it will not kill me. I shall not die of a cough.

Come, we will go back. Your health is precious; you are a man to be missed. For me it is no matter. We will go back..

Climax: They arrived at the end of the basement with a dark, small room on the side of a wall. With Fortunato still drunk, Montresor initiates his plan and chains Fortunato to the wall, trapping him.
