- Hi James today I got a homework about Subsistence Crisis in France and The Great Bengal famine. So can you please help with that

- The reason behind the subsistence crises was that The population of France rose from about 23 millions in 1715 to 28 millions in 1789.
- And about the Bengal Famine the main reason wasshortages in Rice. A variety of factors led to the shortage, but most prominent among them was not supply shortage rather it was due to improper allocation of the available rice stocks
- The increase in population led to rapid increases in the demand for food grains.Most workers received fixed wages which did not keep pace with the rise in prices.Things became worse whenever drought or hail reduced the harvest.
- The issue of rice was lifted temporarily but then put back again as the rice prices in other states also began rising.
- This led to a rapid increase in the demand for food grains. Production of grains could not keep pace with the demand. So the price of bread which was the staple diet of the majority rose rapidly.
- The 1943 Bengal famine, which is estimated to have caused over three million deaths,
