- Reading this Defender newspaper giving two peoples view points on why they want to leave the South and seeing how the Defender has helped people leave the South really just makes me reflect on a message my good from the North sent to me on why I need to come to the North.

- Hi _______________. So just wanted to update you on life in the North. In the North the black man lives a good life. You can get $3.00 a day at minimum and you are not hurried to complete your job. Also money is easy to get here in the North plus your children are able to go to school with the white folk without problems. I know you might be stuck in the South but if you want to really "live" you should come to the North.
- At this point I wonder why am I still in the South. Their is nothing for me here anymore. My life will always be full of suffering if I stay here.
- You know theirs a black man named Charles Debney. The story about him basically says he went to the North and automatically began to enjoys its pleasures.
- Well what things changed for him as he went from the South to the North?
- Well first of all once he was on the train and passed the Mason Dixon line he did not have to sit in the back of the train or in a colored rail car because in the North their were no Jim Crow Laws.
- Also while he was on the Train with a white man from the North he was at first scared but then the white man offered him his newspaper and they talked. No getting beaten for looking at a white man or talking to one in the Northe.
- The North gives a Black man this good of a life. I think I have made a decision on what I will do for myself.
- I decided to take a train to Philadelphia. I am completely fed up with the way I am treated because the color of my skin and all though I have to use the last of my money to buy a train ticket to escape it I think in the long run it will be worth it.
