- Stella hits Kennedy for being racist towards Loretta's daughter. The text says, "As soons as she shut the door, she grabbed Kennedy and slapped her. The girl yelped" (Bennett 224). Stella realizes that Kennedy has messed up any chance of her and Loretta being friends. Kennedy doesn't know better because that's what she was taught.

- Stella can't be honest about who she really is. According to the text "She preferred him to think of her that way. Blank. A curtain hung between her past and present and she could never peek behind it. Who knows what might scuttle through?" Stella doesn't want anyone to know about her past. If people found out that she lied, her life would change.
- Stella doesn't like telling how her and Blake met. The text states, "Again she regretted telling Peg how shr and Blake met. Their story, romantic at the time, only became crasser over the years" (Bennett 259). Stella acknowledges the fact that their story isn't the best due to their age difference, so it's not necessarily something to brag on.
