  • American Isolationism started to rise in the 1930's due to the Great Depression and the loss of World War I. The Public in America started to think isolationism was the best route to go and stay away from all other countries conflicts. America avoided all conflicts across the world to keep the U.S. protected. They did this because America already had so may problems going on that they felt like there was to power or will do engage in war or conflicts.
  • Mussolini's Invasion of Ethiopia (October 1935)
  • In October 1935, Mussolini wanted to take over Ethiopia and make Italy a stronger nation. The Ethiopians had spears and swords to fight off the massive attack from Italy. The Emperor called for help urgently once Italy arrived. He called the League, which did nothing. Barely any League members came to help. The British let the Italian army pass through the Suez Canal on there way to make the attack. The Emperor finally gave into Mussolini, annexing Ethiopia in May of 1936.
  • The Spanish Civil War July 1936
  • Hitler and Mussolini kept testing Europe's democracies. Spain was a monarchy until 1931, until they changed to a republic. In July of 1936, the army joined the fascist leader Francisco Franco in a revolt which began a civil war that lasted for three years. Franco's forces were called the Nationalists. The Armed forces of Republicans only received little help from abroad.The western democracies did not want to join the war besides for the Soviet Union, they sent goods. Franco became Spain's leader, establishing a totalitarian regime.
  • In November of 1938, Hitler announces that he wants to take over Austria and Czechoslovakia into the Third Reich. Hitler knew that many ethnic Germans lived in Austria and Austrians believed in German unity so in March 1938, Hitler sent an Army into Austria and annexed it. France and Britain did not help Austria's independence. Hitlers next location he wanted to target was Czechoslovakia. Many Germans lived on the Western border and about 3-million people spoke German. In 1938 , Hitler demanded Czechoslovakia so they refused and asked France to help.
  • Austria and the Anschluss (March 1938) 
  • The Nonaggression Pact/Nazi-Soviet Pact (August 1939)
  • Britain and France asked the Soviet Union to help with stopping Hitler's aggression. As these countries tried to stop Hitler, Stalin was making agreements with Hitler. Stalin and Hitler made an agreement to never attack each other. In August of 1939, the leaders signed a nonaggression pact. At the end of the decade, the war seemed inevitable.
  • Soviet Union Invades Eastern Poland, Baltic States, and Finland (September 1939-March 1940)
  • On September 17, Stalin sent his army troops to take over the Eastern part of Poland. Stalin moved through annexed countries all the way to the north of Poland. Finland was the only country who tried to stop Stalin from taking over so he sent over a million Soviet troops into Finland. Even though the Finns were outnumbered and outgunned, they put up a fight. The Soviets were not ready to fight in the winter which led them to a harder battle. The Soviets finally won due to numbers of soldiers. Many lost their life because of the thick deep snow. In march of 1941, the Finns had finally surrendered.
