  • In 1929, unemployment rates were high, leading to more poverty and less spending. However there was also a rise in the stock market, becoming a popular way for people to invest money and get more out than what they put in, but it was truly a hit or miss. On October 21st many people woke up to calls from their stockbrokers telling them that they need to pay them back but this was a problem because many people who owned stocks took the money out as a loan from banks to invest in the market.
  • People ran to their banks to take out even more money to pay their stockbrokers back. However banks suddenly couldn't pay these people back since they loaned out all of their money already, causing banks to collapse, poverty, and the stock market to crash even more since people couldnt spare money to buy things and businesses started to lose money. On October 24th, 1929 the stock market crashes lower than before, suddenly everyone is in a panic, many banks are closing all around, people are being laid off in the jobs since businesses cant afford to pay them, and the stock market continues to plummet. This is known as Black Thursday. The next day, friday, hopes rose a bit as the upper class bought many shares in the stock market in hopes to stop this crash. This worked until the next tuesday, Black Tuesday. On October 29th, 1929 after things seemed to being resolving the stock market takes yet another large plummet. This crash is known as the Great Crash
  • During these times of poverty and unemployment, Herbert Hoover was president, recently elected it wasn't a great time for anyone to newly be President. President Hoover was stubborn in the idea of listening to other people and what they think would help with everything. Hoover didn't do much to help the Great Depression and the things he did normally angered the people who were so greatly affected by these events. Hoovervilles started popping up, the name coming from President Hoover, although they weren't named that to be grateful to him, it was for mocking him and blaming him for the reason of their poverty and homelessness.
