  • One major theme of "The Monsters Are Due on Maples Street" is that fear and suspicion are destructive. Fear of losing something that makes a person happy such as loved ones or ones self can make a person do crazy things, especially people in the circumstances as the residents of Maples Street. The first point includes the fact that all of the residents on Maples Street see a dark figure in the distance walking in their direction. All of the residents are fearful but everyone is still waiting for the creature to reveal itself. Everyone is following this unspoken rule except Charlie who pulls out a shotgun out of the blue. Without asking the figure "Who are you?", he shoots the figure. All the characters later find out that the figure is their dear neighbor Pete Van Horn. Pete is now dead on the floor because of Charlie's fear that the item was the monster. This conflict could have easily been resolved if it wasn't for Charlies fear driven mind. My second point follows right after my first point. This is when prior to being accused Charlie blames an innocent teenager, named Tommy. Charlie is most-likely afraid of going to jail or getting himself killed and has no choice but to pick a scapegoat. So instead of explaining to everyone why he is innocent Charlie blames a helpless child. My final point is that the residents go almost in a circle accusing each other. The aliens who are watching over the people see that humans are their own worst enemy. So now the residents of Maple Street are all killing and destroying each other and all the aliens have to do is sit back and watch and wait till their all gone. Fear and suspicion is one of the most destructive things in the world. It can hurt your own reputation and others.
