Storyboard Szöveg

  • Comic created by: Sneha Kopparapu
  • From Homer's The Odyssey:
  • "The Cyclops"
  • When Odysseus's ship approached the land of Cyclopes, they saw "a prodigious man" sleeping in a cave, with his flock "afield"(Homer 127-129). Odysseus decided to take some of his men aboard to visit this Cyclops, "a shaggy mountain reared in solitude"(Homer 133). With him he carried the sweetest wine he ever tasted, perhaps as a peace offering.
  • The rest of you, "stand by and keep watch of the ship"(Homer 135),
  • Look! This seems interesting. I'm taking four of you with me to venture to the cave. I'll bring some wine.
  • "'You are a ninny," if you want me to fear Zeus, for I fear'" not a whistle'" of Zeus (Homer 217, 220).
  • When the Cyclops left his cave, Odysseus and his men camped in it, waiting for him to return. When he did, Odysseus lied to the Cyclops about they were stranded, and asked for him to take care of them "'for the gods' courtesy'" as would "'Zeus [would] avenge the unoffending guest'"(Homer 215-216). However, Polyphemus, the Cyclops, didn't fear Zeus. Instead of welcoming Odysseus and his party, Polyphemus ate some of the men for a meal. Polyphemus trapped Odysseus and the remaining men in the cave behind a giant boulder blocking the exit.
  • We are "'beholden for your help'"(Homer 212) as we were stranded on this island after our ship crashed. Do take care of us, or Zeus will avenge us.
  • Seeing that they couldn't escape using force, Odysseus resorted to trickery. He found a staff that was made of an "olive tree, felled green and left to season"(Homer 267) and sharpened one edge to create a spike. He waited for the Cyclops to return, and offered the wine he brought, telling the Cyclops that his name was Nohbdy. Once the Cyclops was drunk and asleep, Odysseus and his men drove the stake into his eye. In pain, Polyphemus called for his brethren, but when he told them the Nohbdy had attacked him, they assumed that nobody had attacked him and left.
  • This is our revenge. We will bore "our brand" into "that great eye socket"(Homer 337).
  • We have to "[wait] until morning" while "breathing hard"(Homer 387).
  • The next morning Odysseus and his men "hung [themselves] under [the] kinky [bellies]" of rams with their fingers hooked too their wool with "an iron grip"(Homer 384,386). Polyphemus, no longer able to see and in pain, didn't notice when Odysseus and his men escaped the next morning using the flock as a disguise.
  • As Odysseus and his men left the island, Odysseus, anger flaring, yells back to island, announcing that if anyone were to wonder "'how [he was] put to shame and blinded,'" that is was Odysseus, "'Laertes' son, whose home's on Ithaca'"(Homer 458, 460). Polyphemus, learning his attacker's true identity, prays to Poseidon, his father, to make Odysseus voyage as miserable as possible.
  • I, Odysseus, "'raider of cities'"(Homer 459), was the one who tricked you.
  • Poseidon, father, make sure his trip home is cursed.
